Mastering Food Cooking Temperatures: A Beginner’s Guide

Let’s take a minute to discuss food cooking temperatures. The most important part of cooking is making sure you are cooking safely. Be aware of cross contamination. Don’t mix raw foods like meat and veggies on the same food prep and cutting areas. Especially for meats, make sure you are cooking to safe temperatures. These times are all considered lowest safe cooking times. There are some that cook less for medium rare and rare steaks and roasts. These can be considered safe if your source of meat is safe. If you are smoking or roasting for a more tender meal, such as pulled pork, you need higher cooking temperatures. Meals like fall off the bone ribs and brisket also require higher temperatures. These temperatures are more than safe. Ideally, cook pulled pork and brisket to 200F-205F. At this temperature, the meat becomes more tender. The fat and muscle tissue break down effectively. However, the higher temperature a meat is cooked, the higher the chances get of it drying out.
